Help for Refugees in Our Midst

3/1/2017

At a time when the plight of refugees is in the news, there is a practical way we can help former U.S. Military Afghan interpreters who are already in our community.

Julie Bruns and Pierre Shostal belong to a Northern Virginia working group that is helping these folks, as well as other refugees, become self-sustaining. Based at Christ Church in Old Town, this working group of volunteers helps the refugees find jobs, transportation and navigate a new culture. The biggest challenge the refugees face is the high cost of housing.

If you feel called to support the assistance efforts for people who risked their lives to help America in Afghanistan, please contact Julie (drbruns@bellatlantic.net) or Pierre (pshks@aol.com) You can also send checks to: Christ Church (Notation: "Refugee Ministry"), 118 N. Washington Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.

In a related effort, retired Army Col. Keith June is assisting the family of one of his former Afghan interpreters who live in Maryland and are in need of financial assistance. For more information, please contact Keith at KeithJune@earthlink.net.
