Immanuel Sings Adieu to Interim Rector Mary Sulerud

Below, enjoy Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill’s musical farewell to Interim Rector Mary Sulerud on Sunday, June 2, 2013.

The lyrics to “Here's to You, Mary Sulerud” were written by Jamie Conrad (with apologies to Paul Simon) and are reprinted under the video.  Musical accompaniment was provided by guitarists Doug John and Kyrah Drasheff, and the event was emceed by Senior Warden Connie Kurz.

The surprise concert came at the end of the final Sunday service, when the entire congregation joined the choir in singing adieu to Mary and her husband Peder (humorously identified by Mary in her tribute to him as “the guy in the yellow shirt”), who are leaving for her new call as Interim Rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Richmond.

Lyrics to "Here's to You, Mary Sulerud"

And here’s to you, Mary Su-le-rud,
Jeez we love you more than you will know, whoa-whoa-whoa.
God blesses you, Mary Su-le-rud,
Heaven holds a place for those who can’t stay, hey-hey-hey, hey-hey-hey.

Verse 1:
You had to learn a basket-load about us for your job.
You had to help us learn to help ourselves.
Looked around you, all you saw were wide, impatient eyes.
But you knew ex-act-ly what you had to do.

Verse 2:
Well, you got us thinking and we’ve figured out ourselves,
Raised a million dollars on the side,
Got three services again and crowds at every one,
Called a rector who is gonna be a star.
