Senior Adult Ministry and Fellowship
Immanuel’s congregation includes a vibrant community of older adults who are active participants in all aspects of parish life. The mission of Senior Ministry and Fellowship is to support them in their faith journey with educational and fellowship opportunities of special interest to seniors, links to important resources, and programs that help to integrate all generations spiritually.

News and Upcoming EventsMay-June 2024No May luncheon at Goodwin House
Because of a recurrence of COVID at Goodwin House-Alexandria the dining room is closed at this time. Therefore, we are cancelling our monthly luncheon again for May. Please watch for news about the June lunch. Wednesday, May 22: Field Trip to National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.: In a change of plans, Senior Adult Ministry and Fellowship will be visiting the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) on May 22. Opened in 1987, the NMWA is the first museum solely dedicated to championing women artists and encouraging women in the arts. The museum underwent renovation during the pandemic and reopened this past winter. We will be leaving Zabriskie Parish Hall at 12:30pm and plan to return no later than 4:30pm. There will be a co-pay of $20 to ride in the van and admission for seniors is $13 per person. As there is no place convenient to the museum for a group lunch and their café has not yet reopened, those who are interested are invited to gather for sandwiches in the parish hall before we take off. Please RSVP to Karen Besser to join us on this excursion. Tuesday, May 28 Brown Bag Luncheon in Zabriskie Parish Hall with Tom Kerns Our May brown bag luncheon (5-28) will feature fellow parishioner and architect Tom Kerns, who will share with us his experience designing the beautiful Epiphany of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church, Annandale, VA. You will want to hear this presentation before our June outing, which will be a visit to Epiphany with Tom to see the church and enjoy its icons in the setting that he designed. Our trip to Epiphany will be on Wednesday, June 12 at 10:30am (leaving the parish hall around 10:00am). Father John Besarab will join us and discuss how the architecture reflects and facilitates the Greek Catholic Faith. Put it on your calendar now! Tuesday, June 25
Our June brown bag luncheon speaker will be our former Assistant Rector, The Rev. Peter Ackerman. Peter, who is now Rector of Christ Church Chaptico, Maryland, will be coming to tell us about his recently published memoir, Mom, Dad, Me and Classic TV-Growing Up with Classic Television’s Harry Ackerman and Elinor Donahue. |
"Stewardship of Retirement"
Retirement for most of us describes about one-third of our lives. Yet for many, planning for it seldom goes beyond questions of adequate income, a keen anticipation of some things we won't have to do anymore and a vague notion of leisure. These things are essential, but life is much more.
The "Stewardship of Retirement" Seminar was led by Immanuel parishioner The Rev. Dr. Francis H. Wade at Immanuel on September 27, 2014. Participants included both those contemplating retirement and those already retired. A series of break-out sessions drilled down on the issues of leaving one pattern of life and establishing a new one. The first video below is the introduction by Dr. Wade. Below that are shorter videos of his comments preceding each of the break-out sessions.
